Quoting Katie Mack:

The United States has never built its technological, industrial, or military advantages from within. Its power has always come from the strategic advantage of bringing in expertise from abroad and investing to create a stable & diverse research & innovation sector. Destroying that is unrecoverable.

Advent of Code 2023, Day 8

Today’s Advent of Code puzzle was somewhat unsatisfying to me. I found the right answer long before I actually discovered why it was the right answer. So after I got the right answers, I expanded my Pluto.jl notebook with prose explaining my thought process, and talking through the properties that must be true for my approach to work.

You can find the notebook here.

I’m doing Advent of Code! I’m posting my solutions to a GitHub repository, and starting today I’ve posted my solution as a static HTML page generated from a Pluto.jl notebook here on my website.

The solution for today (day 7) can be found here.

US States Score

Saw @caseyliss@mastodon.social share one of these and couldn’t resist trying it out. I’ve defined the terms as follows:

  • lived here: moved a sizable portion of my belongings here and stayed for at least a month.
  • stayed here: stayed overnight in some form of permanent dwelling or campsite at least one night (sleeping in a car doesn’t count)
  • visited here: spent a significant amount of time stopped here for some reason other than a gas station or store
  • stopped here: got out of a car or airport here, maybe just at a gas station or restaurant
  • passed here: passed through but didn’t exit a car or airport

The tail end of fall in Boulder, CO is glorious. The mornings are crisp (but still mostly clear and sunny) and the afternoons are mostly warm (though not too hot).
